Traditional Desserts You May See At A Mexican Restaurant

When you dine out at a Mexican restaurant, you probably fill up on favorites like tacos, burritos, and tortilla chips. But if you can manage to save a little room for dessert, you won't be disappointed. Here are some traditional desserts that you tend to see at Mexican food restaurants.

Reganadas

Reganadas are a traditional cookie that is served coated in cinnamon and sugar. These cookies are traditionally made with lard, which gives them a light and fluffy texture. However, some modern Mexican restaurants may make them with butter, which adds a nice extra layer of flavor. The cinnamon-sugar coating on reganadas can be a little messy, so make sure you eat them over a plate! Most restaurants include a few per order because you really can't eat just one.

Arroz Con Leche

If you have ever had rice pudding, then you're somewhat familiar with arroz con leche already. It really is just a Mexican version of rice pudding. Typically, it is made with whole milk, sweetened condensed milk, and evaporated milk, which gives it a really creamy texture. The flavor usually comes from cinnamon sticks and Mexican vanilla. Some restaurants may add raisins or chopped dates to their arroz con leche, but others keep it simple with just rice.

Bischochitos

The word "biscochitos" means "little biscuits" in Spanish, and that's a pretty good description of this dessert. These are flat cookies, which are typically about 2 inches across. Traditionally, they were shaped like circles, but some restaurants may serve them in different shapes, like stars or squares. Biscochitos are traditionally flavored with anise seed and orange, which gives them a really unique flavor. Some versions call for brandy, which adds yet another layer of flavor. You can enjoy them on their own or dipped into whipped cream. Some restaurants even serve them with a glass of milk for dipping.

Caramel Flan

Caramel flan is a very popular Mexican dessert. It is basically a thick custard baked into a ring and then cut into wedges. The custard layer is topped with a crunch caramel, which you often have to crack with a spoon. Caramel flan is really right and indulgent. If you're not too hungry for dessert, consider splitting a slice with a friend. You'll still have plenty!

Each one of these Mexican desserts has its own characteristics. They are all worth trying if you see them on the menu at a local Mexican restaurant.
